Web Event: The Shattering of Loneliness

Web Event: The Shattering of Loneliness

Regular readers of this blog might remember me making a couple of references (here and here) to the great podcast The Eucatastrophe, which features Joel Harrison (Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Sydney), and David Taylor, who runs the theologically and philosophically informed Theoria Counseling and Consultation.

The podcast describes itself as a one that “meander[s] through politics, pop culture, church, and society to consider true human ends and how life may be enchanted”.

If you, like me, are a regular listener to the podcast, you would have, like me, been saddened to hear that the podcast has been on hiatus of late. As faithful listeners to the podcast, we would all be eagerly awaiting a second coming of the podcast, almost as eagerly as we await a second coming of Christ.

Almost…

In the meantime, we are now being given some glimmers of their abiding presence, as they organise what I think is the first (somewhat) official event.

Earlier this month, David announced on social media that it will hold a reading event, organised around the book The Shattering of Loneliness: On Christian Remembrance. It is a book written by the Norwegian Cistercian and bishop, Erik Varden. Readers of this blog may remember me posting on Varden on an post for Ash Wednesday.

Like a lot of things Scandinavian, the book is as profound as it is concise. The Shattering of Loneliness covers the many dimensions of memory for the Christian, as well as anecdotes that point to the depth of the interior life that comes with the life of contemplation.

The event will be held on Zoom on 3rd November 2021, at 7:30pm. The event is password protected and will be distributed shortly before the event.

To stay informed about this event, you could either follow The Eucatastrophe on Twitter, or also follow Awkward Asian Theologian on facebook and on Twitter.
